Scuba
Diving in Tofo
Mozambique offers world class scuba diving in the clear,
warm waters of the Indian Ocean. It's possible to enjoy
good diving all year round from Tofo Beach, although sea
conditions vary throughout the year. If you would like to
see Whale Sharks, October to March is the best time to see
these magnificent creatures in these waters but it is possible
to spot a Whale Shark most of the year.
June to September is an ideal time to see migrating Humpback
Whales cruising along the coastline and regular Dolphin
and Turtle sightings makes the day's diving extra special.
Along Mozambique's 2500 kilometres of beautiful, unspoilt
coastline lie rich, colourful coral reefs which are host
to some of the most amazing marine life the world has
to offer. The reefs around Tofo offer varying depths from
10 - 40 metres. Conditions are ideal for some of the larger
pelagics. Whale Shark and Manta Ray sightings are very
common, especially on beautiful Manta Reef, The Oasis
and Galleria. See our dive sites page for full details
of these dive sites and more.
The reefs are teeming with colourful tropical fish such
as Angel, Butterfly, Surgeonfish and graceful Moorish
Idols. Large Yellow Trumpet Fish and Trigger Fish are
found in abundance on reefs such as Praia da Rocha, a
shallow, low-lying reef, along with large bottom dwellers
such as Crocodile Fish and Blue-Spotted Rays.
The configuration of coral bommies create some spectacular
swim-throughs and gullies, home to beautiful Honeycomb
Moray Eels, Egg Cowries, Octopus and sometimes a majestic
Loggerhead or Leatherback Turtle. The list of stunning
marine life is endless.
The sea conditions can vary from very calm to quite choppy.
However, the surf entry and exit is made safe and easy
by our powerful twin-engined semi-rigid boats, which are
designed to make the journey to and from the dive sites
as speedy and comfortable as possible. Our boat skippers
are experienced in surf entries and exits - which is all
part of the fun!
Seasons and Temperatures.
As we dive all year round, here is a little more information
on conditions throughout the year. Summer months are October
to April. Winter months are May to September. The water
temperature in the summer months is on average 27-28 degrees
C but sometimes drops to 22-23 degrees C (although this
is rare). Water temperature in the winter months is average
22 degrees C but can go as high as 24 degrees C and as
low as 18 degrees C. Visibility is variable all year round
with highs of 30m and lows of 5m. Windy months are usually
February (when there is a higher chance of cyclones) and
August, although, again this is not always the case. When
winds are strong, the sea can become rough but diving
is still possible. A dive rarely has to be cancelled due
to bad conditions.
Diving with Diversity
Before your day's scuba diving begins, join us in the
shop for a wake-up cup of tea or coffee. There is ample
space for you to assemble and test your diving equipment
before it is loaded onto the boat. Our staff will help
you with all your equipment requirements. Before the dive,
the dive guide will give a full and thorough dive and
safety briefing and answer any questions that you may
have. There is a safe in the office to store your valuable
items while you are out diving.
It is only a short walk from the shop to the beach and
across the sand. Your equipment will be transported to
the boat - no heavy carrying!
Once the boat is launched, it is generally only
a short journey to some of the most spectacular reefs
in the area.
After the dive, take time with us to enjoy another cup
of coffee to quench your divers thirst, flick through
the fish books and log your dive with our staff members.
There will be plenty of time to swap your equipment onto
a fresh tank and relax a while longer before the next
dive. Alternatively, if it is your last dive of the day,
there is plenty of fresh water to rinse your equipment,
hanging space and storage in our spacious gear room.
Next door is the Surf Café where you can enjoy
snacks, coffees and milkshakes while you relax.
For those of our customers participating in one of our
PADI Courses, we have an excellent 9m x 5m on-site salt-water
training pool for completion of all shallow water training
in controlled and comfortable conditions. We have cool
and comfortable classroom facilities equipped with TV,
video, and all other requirements for an enjoyable training
environment. We provide all the training materials and
equipment (up to and including Rescue Diver) that you
will require for your course.
Important Message for certified divers. Please
remember to bring your certification card and/or log book
with you when you come to dive with Diversity Scuba. We
will not be able to take you diving if you have no proof
of certification or experience. Thank you.
