IDC and EFRI
Cost: R 6 400.00
Duration: 9 days (including prep day
and EFR Instructor)
Course Overview:
IDC stands for Instructor Development Course. It prepares
candidates to function as PADI Instructors. The PADI IDC
provides individuals who already possess instructor-level
dive theory, role model watermanship, rescue skills and
leadership abilities* with additional training that allows
them to implement the PADI system in confined water, classroom
and open water environments. The PADI IDC also helps instructor
candidates gain complete understanding of PADI’s
educational goals and philosophies.
* This is done through previous leadership level courses,
either PADI Divemaster or equivalent
The IDC encompasses both the Assistant Instructor (AI)
and Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI). Details are as
follows:
The AI course is a 3-day course and introduces
candidates to the PADI method of teaching, the course
consists of 7 staff presentations, 2 candidate knowledge,
2 pool and 1 open water presentations, skills assessment
and standards exam.
The OWSI is a 4-day course and further enhances
candidates teaching skills and gives a more thorough insight
into the PADI system of education. The course consists
of 13 staff presentations, 2 further candidate knowledge
and pool presentations and 1 further open water presentation,
5 theory exams (similar to the 5 DM theory exams) and
a set distance snorkel swim.
Pre-requisite qualification:
PADI Divemaster or leadership level certification with
another recreational scuba training organisation. Be at
least18 years old. Have been a certified diver for at
least 6 months. Have logged at least 100 open water dives
(to include experience in deep, night and navigation dives).
Submit a medical statement signed by a licensed physician
within 12 months of the IDC starting date, stating that
the candidate is fit for diving. Submit proof of CPR and
first aid training within 24 months prior to the IDC start
date.
Independent learning prerequisite. Prior to the start
of the IDC the candidate must have completed all 16 IDC
knowledge reviews from the candidate workbook.
EFRI
Cost: Complimentary as part of the IDC
Duration: 1 day
The EFRI (Emergency First Response Instructor) course
gives additional training which focuses on coaching techniques
that makes the course relaxed and enjoyable. It enables
the instructor or divemaster to be able to teach PADI
EFR courses, which can be offered to anyone, diver or
non-diver as valuable, recognised, first aid training.
The course includes AED (Automated External Defibrillation)
basic O2 and Care for Children
Note: A recognised CPR/First Aid qualification
gained within 24 months of the start of the PADI Rescue
course is now a prerequisite, so it makes sense to be
able to offer both elements that make up the PADI Rescue
Diver Course.
The IE (Instructor Examination)
Cost: R 4 000.00

After successfully completing the IDC the only thing left
for a candidate to successfully become a PADI scuba instructor
is for the candidate to complete a PADI Instructor Examination.
This is independent of the IDC and is conducted by specially
trained PADI staff. The evaluation is conducted over 2
days. The IE is an evaluative program that tests the instructor
candidate’s teaching ability, dive theory knowledge,
waterskill level, understanding of the PADI system and
attitude and professionalism.
